Serial Cable Selection

Serial Cables

Stand-alone and eavesdrop are the two standard types of serial congurations. Stand-alone denotes a decoder connected to a

computer’s serial port. An eavesdrop installation places the decoder between a terminal and a host computer in a multi-use system.

Stand-Alone

A stand-alone conguration connects a decoder directly to a computer ’s serial port. It requires a single length of cable with a

connector on each end. Datalogic cable part numbers can be determined for each installation by answering the following questions:

1. What gender connector is on the computer (serial port)?

M (Male) F (Female)

2. Which pin has data coming out of the computer (serial port)?

3. Is the computer’s serial port an IBM AT 9-pin inte face?

Serial Input Software

For a stand-alone serial conguration, the host computer must be programmed to receive serial data input. Many applications have

this option built in. Datalogic offers Barcom for MS-DOS computers, which is a 2K Novell-compatible memory-resistant (TSR) program

that makes serial input appear as if typed on the computer’s keyboard. It does not require other software changes.
